Long distance, one board

These games work when ten minutes is all you have. Gomoku, Reversi and Checkers run 10 minutes a round, so one game before bed is a real option rather than a project. Neither of you has to set an evening aside for it.

The party stays put and only the game changes, so you choose again after every round: Shogi tonight, Hanafuda Koi-Koi the next time.

In the same room, still one device each

Even sitting across the table from each other, you each hold your own screen. A hand of cards only works if it is yours alone, and a board reads better from your own side. A laptop against a phone is fine, and nobody has to pass a device back and forth between turns.

When one of you is stronger

If a game turns one-sided, practice against the CPU and come back to it. Every game has a tutorial, and the key rules stay reachable from the menu mid-game.

Length is the other dial. When 20 minutes of Chess or Shogi is more than the evening has room for, a 10-minute game gives you several rounds in the same time. A short game is also easier to lose: the next one starts right away.

How to choose

A quick round: Gomoku, Reversi, Checkers or Hasami Shogi, all 10 minutes — or Crazy Eights if you would rather hold cards.
Something slower: Chess and Shogi at 20 minutes, Go at 15.
To move pieces rather than place them: Backgammon (15 minutes), or Mancala and Japanese Mancala (10 each).
For Japanese cards: Hanafuda Koi-Koi, 15 minutes, with the scoring shown on screen.

Can two people play on the same device?

One device per person. Even sitting side by side, you both join the same party from your own screen.

Does it work long distance?

Yes. Send the invite link and the other person opens it in a browser — no account, no download.

Is it free?

All the two-player games are free, and the person you invite does not need an account.

Can one of us be on a phone and the other on a computer?

Yes. The same URL opens in any browser, on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

What if my partner does not know the game?

Run the tutorial first. The key rules are also in the in-game menu while you play.
