You can play before you know the scoring
In Hanafuda Koi-Koi, the cards you capture form scoring combinations, and each time one completes you choose between calling koi-koi to keep going or stopping there and banking it. The hard part is knowing the combinations, so they are counted for you and what you currently hold is shown on screen.
Cards you are allowed to match light up. The whole game is matching a card to another of the same month, so you can get through a round by following the highlights.
About the art and the months
The deck covers twelve months with four cards each. Every month has its own plant — pine, plum, cherry and so on — and within a month the cards rank as brights, animals, ribbons and plains. Every combination is built out of those four ranks.
It is a good game to play with a call running, because hearing someone call koi-koi tells you how much they think they can still get. The player who stops takes the points, so deciding when to stop is most of the game, and the pause before somebody makes up their mind is half of what you are listening for.
How to choose
- If you want something quick, start with a shorter game.
- For a slower, face-to-face game, try one of the board games.
- For a game you have not played before, try the CPU once before inviting a friend. It goes faster that way.
- Even in the same room, everyone should use their own device.
