Board games

Games played face to face on a board with stones or pieces. You can also practice against the CPU.

Players: 1 to 100. Most of them are played one against one.
Time: about 2–90 min. Gomoku, Reversi and Hasami Shogi are about ten minutes each.

Legal moves: Squares you may use light up. Illegal moves cannot be made at all.

Ban-sugoroku: Ban-sugoroku is the old Japanese form of backgammon, played from Heian courtiers to Edo townsfolk. Two players race fifteen stones home with two dice.

Bughouse Chess: Captured pieces go straight to your partner. Four players play on two boards at once, dropping pocket pieces to help their team. Play solo with three CPUs.

Chu Shogi: Chu shogi is a 2-player, 12×12 shogi with 46 pieces each and about 60 minutes of play. The lion moves twice per turn, captured pieces leave the game, and taking the king wins. Free in your browser.
Crokinole: Crokinole is a disc-flicking board game for 2 players, taking about 15 minutes. Playing black or white, you must hit your opponent's discs, and you aim to leave yours in the high-scoring centre.

Nothing on a board is hidden

On a board, what you see is all there is. There is no hand to hide, so you and your opponent are looking at exactly the same thing and thinking about the same problem. Talking over a call changes none of it — the board does not move for anybody.

Legal squares light up and illegal ones cannot be pressed. Things like a forbidden point in Go or two pawns on a file in Shogi are blocked before the move happens, not punished after it. Nobody loses on a technicality while they are still learning.

From quick games to long ones

Gomoku, Reversi, Hasami Shogi, Checkers and Mancala all finish in about ten minutes. Go and Backgammon take about fifteen, Shogi and Chess about twenty. The amount you have to learn rises in roughly the same order, so working down the list keeps it gentle.

Mancala seats two to four. Only the shape of the board changes, so it is a useful thing to reach for when three people turn up and you do not want anyone sitting out. It is short enough that a fourth player arriving late can be dealt into the next round instead of waiting out a long game.

How to choose

If you want something quick, start with a shorter game.
For a slower, face-to-face game, try one of the board games.
For a game you have not played before, try the CPU once before inviting a friend. It goes faster that way.
Even in the same room, everyone should use their own device.

Do I need a physical board?

No. The board, the stones and the pieces are all on screen.

Can I accidentally make an illegal move?

No. Only the squares you are allowed to use can be pressed.

Can I practise alone?

Yes. All 92 of them have a CPU, and you can choose how strong it plays.
