Rule highlights

Setup, play, winning, and house rules

Setup

  • 2 players. On your own, play against the computer.
  • The board has three nested squares joined by four lines plus diagonal lines at the corners, giving 24 points.
  • White and Black have twelve stones each; White goes first.

How to play

  • First, take turns placing one stone at a time on an empty point.
  • When all twelve are placed, move one of your stones along a line, diagonals included, to a neighbouring empty point.
  • Three of your stones in a line (a mill), including the diagonal lines at the corners, let you remove one of your opponent's stones. Stones in a mill are safe unless every one of the opponent's stones is in a mill. Captured stones do not return during this game and do not become your stones.
  • Open a mill and close it again on a later turn to capture again.
  • With three stones left, you may fly a stone to any empty point (this can be turned off in the settings).

Winning

  • You win when your opponent has at most two stones on the board and in hand combined, or cannot move. Count both during placement too: two on the board and one in hand keeps play going; one on the board and one in hand is a loss.
  • If the board is full when all stones are placed, the game is a draw.
  • The game is a draw after 50 moves by both players combined without a capture. Placements do not count; a capture resets the count to zero. If the 50th move forms a mill, capture a stone and continue.

FAQ

How many can play?

2 players. On your own, play against the computer.

How is it different from Nine Men's Morris?

Each player has twelve stones instead of nine, and diagonal lines at the corners allow diagonal mills, so there is more capturing.

Can the board fill up?

Yes. With 24 stones for 24 points, a board that is full when all stones are placed is a draw.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. No app is needed — just open it in a browser. You can join the same party as people on a PC or tablet.

Can two people play?

Yes. This game supports 2 or more players.

Can we play without being online at the same time?

Yes. Choose “Turn-based (told each turn)” and you can make one move whenever you like. We tell you when it is your turn. A table ends automatically, with no winner or loser, after 45 days without a move.
