Rule highlights

Setup, play, winning, and house rules

Setup

  • The board is the real print Kamakura Ejima Oyama Shinpan Orai Sugoroku, drawn by Katsushika Hokusai (signing as Zen Hokusai Iitsu), from the National Diet Library Digital Collections.
  • 2–6 players. Playing alone, you face 3 CPUs.
  • Everyone places a piece on the start, Nihonbashi (square 1). Each piece has its own shape, so you can tell them apart even on a shared square. Pieces never block or capture each other.

How to play

  • Take turns rolling one die and move that many squares in the order of the printed numbers (2, 3, 4 … 52).
  • The road runs from Shinagawa, Kanagawa, Hodogaya and Totsuka to Kamakura (Engaku-ji, Kencho-ji, Tsurugaoka, Hase), along Shichirigahama to Enoshima, from Fujisawa to Mt. Oyama, then home through Atsugi, Nagatsuta, Mizonokuchi, Futago, Sangenjaya and Shibuya.
  • Six squares carry an inn mark (泊): Hodogaya, Yukinoshita, Enoshima, Oyama, Tsuruma Post Town and Mizonokuchi. Stop on one and you miss your next turn.

Winning

  • Complete the circuit in number order and get home to Nihonbashi with the exact roll. The first player home wins, as the printed preface says.
  • Extra pips send you back as the preface says: 1 extra to Shibuya, 2 to Sangenjaya, 3 to Futago, 4 to Mizonokuchi, 5 to Nagatsuta. If that square is an inn, you miss a turn too.
  • By default, the game ends when the first player gets home. Others are ranked by their current position along the route; pieces on the same square share a rank. Turn on “Rank everyone” to continue until only one player remains.

House rules

"Bounce back" moves you back from Nihonbashi by the extra pips. "Over is fine" lets any roll that reaches Nihonbashi win.As printedCan be changed

FAQ

Who made this sugoroku?

The pictures are by Zen Hokusai Iitsu (Katsushika Hokusai) and the text was compiled by Ryutei Tanehiko; the publishers were Nishimuraya Yohachi and Tsuruya Kiemon. The original is held by the National Diet Library, which publishes it online as out of copyright.

Where does the board image come from?

From the National Diet Library Digital Collections (call number 寄別8-3-2-5), straightened and cropped to the printed frame. The pieces, square rings and route arrows are drawn by BGJ on top; the picture itself is not altered.

How many can play?

2 to 6. Playing alone, you face 3 CPUs.

How is it different from BGJ's Sugoroku?

BGJ's Sugoroku uses boards we designed. This one is Hokusai's actual print, the only square effect is the inn (miss a turn), and it is a round trip: you win by coming back to Nihonbashi.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. No app is needed — just open it in a browser. You can join the same party as people on a PC or tablet.

Can two people play?

Yes. This game supports 2 or more players.

Can we play without being online at the same time?

Yes. Choose “Turn-based (told each turn)” and you can make one move whenever you like. We tell you when it is your turn. A table ends automatically, with no winner or loser, after 45 days without a move.
