Four is what these games were written for

Hearts was written for four players and it shows in every hand. It survives at three or five, but four divides the deck evenly and the game runs the way it was meant to run — the business of passing hearts around holds its shape.

President with four gives you a full set of ranks from president down to scum. The card exchange at the start of each hand then applies to everybody, which is what keeps the order churning round after round.

Choosing by length

Sevens and Crazy Eights take about ten minutes, President about fifteen, Hearts about twenty. If the evening has a fixed end, divide the time you have left by the length of a round before you choose, and nothing gets cut off halfway through a hand.

A seat vacated mid-game is picked up by a CPU. Reopening the link on the same device puts that player straight back into their own chair with their score intact. A dropped connection therefore costs the table a couple of turns instead of the whole evening, which matters most in the longer games where starting again would mean losing twenty minutes of play.

How to choose

If you want something quick, start with a shorter game.
For a slower, face-to-face game, try one of the board games.
For a game you have not played before, try the CPU once before inviting a friend. It goes faster that way.
Even in the same room, everyone should use their own device.
