Mahjong scoring

A score starts from the base points — fu times 2 to the power of han plus two — then multiplied by six for the dealer or four for everyone else, and rounded up to the nearest 100. The table and the calculator below both run the code the game itself uses.

Points table

20 fu only happens with pinfu on a self-draw, and 25 fu only with seven pairs. From 5 han up, fu stops mattering.

Score calculator

Pick the han and the fu and you get the payments as well as the total.

The winner receives:—

Each honba adds 300 on a ron, or 100 from each player on a tsumo. Riichi sticks on the table go straight to the winner.

The calculator needs JavaScript. The tables read fine without it.

Working it out

  1. Count the fu (the fu page has the steps).
  2. Base points are fu times 2 to the power of han plus two, capped at 2,000 — that cap is the mangan.
  3. 5 han is 2,000; 6 to 7 han is 3,000 (haneman); 8 to 10 is 4,000 (baiman); 11 to 12 is 6,000 (sanbaiman); 13 and above is 8,000 (yakuman).
  4. On a ron, the dealer collects six times the base points and everyone else four times, from the player who dealt the tile.
  5. On a tsumo, the dealer collects twice the base points from each player; a non-dealer collects twice from the dealer and once from each of the others. Every payment is rounded up to 100.

Now put it to work
