Rule highlights

Setup, play, winning, and house rules

Setup

  • Three players use 108 tiles, removing 2–8 of characters. Deal 13 each and start at 35,000 points. There is one red five of circles and one of bamboo by default.
  • Seats are East, South and West. The default half-game runs from East 1 through South 3.

How to play

  • Draw and discard to build four sets (matching triples or consecutive numbers of one suit) and a pair.
  • You can call pon or kan on a discard. Chi, taking a discard for a run, is unavailable.
  • By default, set north aside and draw a replacement: each extracted north adds one han. Winning on the replacement adds rinshan kaihou. You can instead keep north as always-dora in the hand.
  • With a concealed hand one tile from winning, pay 1,000 points to declare riichi.
  • Any kita interrupts ippatsu, Blessing of Earth, double riichi and the nine-terminals draw. North can form a set in the hand but is not a value wind.
  • Choose whether 4 han 30 fu and 3 han 60 fu round up to mangan.
  • A pair matching both your seat wind and the round wind adds 4 or 2 fu.
  • End below zero, or at zero as well.
  • Mahjong Soul: only the liable yakuman. Tenhou: all combined yakuman. Maru-Jan: liable portion, also the fourth open kan. The liable player pays tsumo, shares ron, and pays honba.
  • Reveal open/added-kan dora after discarding or immediately. Closed-kan dora always reveals immediately.
  • Repeat if any ron winner is dealer, or only when the winner nearest after the discarder is dealer.
  • On an exhaustive draw, ready players share this total from players who are not ready: 3,000 or 2,000 points.

Winning

  • Complete a winning shape with at least one yaku. Win by tsumo on your draw or ron on a discard; scoring and payments are automatic.
  • On tsumo, the two opponents pay their usual four-player amounts. The missing North seat pays nothing (tsumo loss).
  • At an exhaustive draw, ready hands collect 3,000 points in total from unready hands. The dealer continues after winning or being ready at a draw.
  • End below zero; extend if nobody reaches 40,000 at the default final hand. Default settlement: 35,000 return, no oka, +15 / 0 / −15 placement points. Return points, bonuses, honba and draw treatment are configurable.
