Two-Corner Mahjong Strategy and Tips

Here is how to think about winning at Two-Corner Mahjong, split into short lessons. Each one reads on its own, and each one comes with a real position: press Try it on the board and you play the move yourself.

Lines can run outside the board

Lesson 1

In this game, you can take two identical tiles if a line with at most two bends joins them. A line can't pass over a tile, but it can run through empty spaces and around the outside of the board.

Tiles at the edges can often be joined by going around the outside, so they are pairs from the start. Even when the middle is full, remembering the outside lane makes pairs easier to spot.

Here the identical tiles at both ends of the top row are blocked by the middle tiles. A line over the top connects them with just two bends, so take that pair.

Only tiles that can step out to the edge can use the outside lane; a tile surrounded on every side cannot leave.

Clear the outer pairs first

Lesson 2

A tile in the middle of the grid is boxed in by tiles, so its line can't get out. To clear it you first need to clear tiles around it and open a lane.

When several pairs are available, choose the ones on the edge. The fewer outer tiles remain, the easier it is for lines to reach the inner ones, and the more pairs you will see.

Hunting only for pairs in the middle costs time. In a race, working from the edges in is steadier and finishes faster.

Here the East pair in the top row and the pair in the bottom row are both on the edge. Clear the top, then the bottom, to open lanes to the middle.

When to use a hint

Lesson 3

Following lines that bend through empty spaces takes time, so finding a joinable pair can be slow. When you are unsure, press [Hint] and a pair lights up with a dashed edge and a "?".

The hint prefers a pair that can still be cleared to the end, so it lowers the risk of getting stuck. It helps in the crowded early grid and when few tiles are left and you hesitate.

When hints are limited, skip them where lines are easy to see and keep one for when you search and find nothing. The button shows the count left, such as "Hint ×2", so you can see how many remain.

Press [Hint] in this position and see which pair lights up.

Shuffle as soon as you are stuck

Lesson 4

When the pairs counter reaches zero you are stuck, and looking harder will not find a joinable pair. The counter is in the tool row below the grid, so as soon as it reads zero, press [Shuffle].

A shuffle re-deals the remaining tiles so they can be cleared to the end again. Even when the number of shuffles is limited, using one and moving on ranks you higher than sitting stuck.

The same goes when a shuffle costs a pause (10 seconds): the pause is the price of getting out, so press it as soon as you notice and look for your next pair while you wait.

Here every matching pair is blocked by other tiles and none can be joined. Press [Shuffle].

Try it on the board

Pick a lesson and the board starts from that position. Start over as often as you like.

Now put it to work
