Hearts Dice Strategy and Tips

Here is how to think about winning at Hearts Dice, split into short lessons. Each one reads on its own, and each one comes with a real position: press Try it on the board and you play the move yourself.

Score for the streak

Lesson 1

In Hearts Dice, your score depends only on how far an unbroken streak runs from H through E, A, R, T and S among the six dice you rolled. Each die shows 1 through 6, drawn on screen as the letters H, E, A, R, T and S. If no H appears at all, nothing else matters and the roll scores zero. Starting from H, the streak keeps going until a needed letter is missing, and however far it reaches becomes your score.

This roll shows H, E, A, S, S, S. The streak runs from H through E to A, but the next letter it needs, R (a 4), never appears, so the streak stops at three letters: H-E-A. The extra S, S, S do not add anything. Press Roll to see how the streak turns into a score.

Repeats only count once

Lesson 2

When counting the streak, rolling the same letter two or more times still counts as just one step. Two H dice, for example, still only take the streak as far as H itself, and what happens next depends on whether E follows. Stacking up copies of the same letter never adds extra points on its own — only reaching further, different letters does that.

This roll shows H, H, E, T, S, S. The two H dice count as a single H, and with one E present the streak reaches HE. The next letter it needs, A (a 3), is missing, so the streak stops at two letters for 5 points. Press Roll to see that doubling up a letter does not double your score.

Three H wipes your total

Lesson 3

The one thing to watch for in Hearts Dice is the letter H itself. Rolling three or more H does not just fail to add points for that turn — it resets your entire running total back to zero, wiping out everything you had built up. One or two H dice behave normally, but the moment a third H appears the rule changes completely.

This roll shows H, H, H, R, T, S. Looking only at the streak, H alone is already worth nothing — but because three H dice appeared, the reset rule also takes over and wipes your whole running total to zero. The closer you are to the target, the more this single roll can hurt. Press Roll to feel it happen.

Reaching the target starts a final round

Lesson 4

Reaching the target score (100 by default) does not win the game on the spot. Everyone whose turn still comes after the player who reached it gets one more roll before the game ends — a rule that keeps the first player to reach the target from getting an unfair edge.

In this position your total is 85 and your opponent's is 60. If the streak reaches all six letters, HEARTS, that is worth 25 points, taking your total from 85 to 110 — past the 100 target. That starts the final round, in which everyone else gets one last turn before the game is decided. Press Roll to see what happens the instant you reach the target.

How many points can you expect?

Lesson 5

With the default (standard) scoring table, each roll of Hearts Dice is worth about 4.1 points on average (a figure this site calculated from its own scoring rules). Dividing the 100-point target by 4.1 might suggest around 25 rolls, but rolling three or more H wipes your whole total back to zero, so games usually take longer. In two-player test games it took about 54 rolls between both players to finish (90% of games within 116), while a full HEARTS streak is worth 25 points and three H erases everything you had banked (also this site's own count).

This roll shows H, E, R, R, T, S. The streak runs from H to E, but the next letter it needs, A (a 3), never appears, so it stops at two letters for 5 points. Stacking up modest scores like this, with the occasional big jump or reset to zero, is the normal rhythm of Hearts Dice. Press Roll to see an average score land.
