Cheat: Rules and How to Play
Cheat (I Doubt It) is a bluffing card game for 2-8 players, about 10 minutes. Play cards face down calling out A, 2, 3... in order, then bluff or call it. Free, in-browser, no account.
Setup
- Two to eight players. Four to six is the easiest range, but the rules stay the same even with just two. Uses a standard 52-card deck with no jokers (you can add 0-2 jokers in the settings).
- Shuffle and deal out the whole deck. Any extra cards go to the players starting from the first dealer, one each. The dealer moves on one seat each new round.
- Play starts on Ace. After King, it wraps back around to Ace. Nobody can change this order.
How to play
- On your turn, call out the current rank and play one or more cards face down onto the pile. Suits do not matter.
- You may play cards that do not match what you called — that is the bluff. You choose how many to play, up to the table limit (the default is one card).
- Right after you play, anyone else may call "Cheat!" Only the first one to do so counts, even if two people call it at once.
- If nobody calls it — either the timer runs out or everyone else answers that they won't challenge — play passes to the next player, who calls out the next rank in order.
- When someone calls "Cheat!", only the cards from that last play get turned face up; anything played earlier stays hidden. Any one of them not matching the call means it was a lie.
- A lie means the player who played takes the whole pile into their hand. The truth means the challenger takes it instead. Those cards can be played again later.
- With jokers in play, a joker counts as whatever rank was called, so it always turns out to be "true".
Winning and scoring
- The first player to empty their hand wins — as long as their final play survives any challenge (a lie just means picking up the pile and playing on).
- Everyone else is ranked by how many cards they are holding when the game ends, fewest first. Ties share a place.
- A player who resigns folds their hand face down into the pile and takes the last place. Their turn is skipped from then on.

| Name | Description | Default | Changeable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cards per playCards per playThe rank you must claim is set in order, and any card that does not match it is a lie. Playing two or more at once gets rid of cards quickly, but if even one of them is wrong, a Cheat call catches you. With no limit, bold lies become common and the game gets wilder. | The most cards you may play face down in one turn. | 1 | Yes |
| Time to call it | How long everyone has to call "Cheat!" after a play, before it goes through automatically. | 10s | Yes |
| JokersJokersA joker counts as a true card for any rank. Holding one means you can always play honestly on your turn. The more jokers there are, the more often a Cheat call turns out to be wrong. | How many jokers (always-true wild cards) are shuffled into the deck. | None | Yes |
Terms
- Cheat
- Calling out that the last play was a lie. Anyone but the player who played may call it, right after the play.
- Called rank
- The rank everyone is calling out this turn, A through K in order. You cannot choose it.
- The pile
- Every card played so far, face down. Nobody sees inside it unless it gets challenged.
- Joker
- An optional wild card that always counts as the called rank, so it is always "true" when revealed.
FAQ
Can I mix in cards that don't match my call?
Yes — that is the whole point. Bluffing is expected, and you choose how many cards to play.
What if two people call "Cheat!" at once?
Whichever call reaches the server first counts. The other is ignored, even if both looked simultaneous.
What happens if nobody calls it?
Play just moves on to the next player, who calls the next rank. Running out the timer counts the same way.
How much of the pile gets revealed on a challenge?
Only the cards from the most recent play. Everything played before that stays face down and cannot be challenged.
What if my last card gets challenged?
If it was a lie, you take the pile and keep playing. If it was true (or nobody called it), you win.
How do jokers work?
You can add 0-2 in the settings. A joker always counts as whatever rank was called, so it comes up "true" every time it's revealed.
Can a game end in a tie?
First place always goes to one winner. Lower places tie if the players involved end with the same number of cards left.
