Speed Strategy and Tips

Here is how to think about winning at Speed, split into short lessons. Each one reads on its own, and each one comes with a real position: press Try it on the board and you play the move yourself.

Which pile you choose decides your next card

Lesson 1

In Speed, a card that fits either pile can change what happens next depending on where you play it. Play it on one pile and it can lock your other card out; play it on the other pile and that same card stays playable. When you're not sure, check which pile your other card matches before you commit.

Here you're holding a seven that fits both the left pile (a six) and the right pile (an eight). Your other card is a five, which only matches the left pile's six. Play the seven on the left and the pile becomes a seven — your five no longer fits.

Play the highlighted seven on the right pile instead. The left pile stays a six, so your five is still ready to go. Whenever a card fits both piles, take half a second to check which choice keeps your other card alive.

Call ready the moment you're stuck

Lesson 2

In Speed, once neither side can play on either pile, nothing moves on its own. Getting past that point needs both players to call ready — one call alone doesn't do it. The moment you notice you're stuck, call it right away instead of waiting to see what happens.

Here neither you nor your opponent has a card that fits either pile — you're both completely stuck. Your opponent has already called ready and is waiting on you.

Tap the highlighted Ready. The sooner you call it, the shorter the pause before new cards come out. Once you notice you're stuck, the right move is to call it immediately, not to think it over.

Use Change when only you are stuck

Lesson 3

With the Change rule on, whenever none of your four hand cards fit either pile, you can cycle them into your own deck for four new ones — regardless of whether your opponent can still play. Unlike calling ready, this only needs you, so there's no waiting on the other player.

Here neither of your two cards fits either pile. Even if your opponent plays a card of their own, the pile just changes to another number you still can't use — you're still stuck either way.

Tap the highlighted Change. Your hand cycles through your deck, and a playable card might come up. When you're the only one stuck, try Change before waiting on your opponent's next move.

Save the joker for when you'd otherwise be stuck

Lesson 4

A joker can be played on any pile at any time, and afterwards any card at all can be played on top of it. Because it never cares what the pile shows, it's worth saving as insurance for the moment you'd otherwise have nothing to play. Spend it while an ordinary card would do the same job, and that insurance is gone early.

Here you're holding a joker and a five, and the five fits the left pile (a six). Playing the joker would move things along, but the five does exactly the same job.

Play the highlighted five on the left pile instead. The joker stays in your hand. As long as an ordinary card keeps the game moving, save the joker for the moment you'd otherwise be stuck.

Try it on the board

Pick a lesson and the board starts from that position. Start over as often as you like.

Now put it to work
